What is the first thing you think of when you hear
"Chicago" - The Windy City. The name Windy City was coined by an editor from
New York who was actually describing the politicians of Chicago during the
city's first World Fair. While the weather can be windy, the truth is that many
other cities in the country are windier.
The winter months are cold, with temperatures ranging from 15 to 40 degrees.
During the warmer months, you will enjoy beautiful sunny days averaging 75 to
85 degrees. Snow is also a part of the climate, averaging anywhere from 30 to
40 inches although the past two years have produced much more.
While several French-Canadian settlers made their way
through the uncharted Chicago from 1673 to 1796, it was not until 1837 that the
city of Chicago was incorporated with a population of 4,170 people.
In 1851, the first Northwestern, the first university, was founded. The
Great Chicago Fire took place in 1871, killing 300 residents and leaving more
than 90,000 residents without a home. Property damage was at more than $200
million, leaving the city devastated.
However, in the true spirit of this city, it was
rebuilt into the thriving metropolitan it is today. This once small town has
grown into a successful city with more than 2.7 million people. The ratio of
men to women is 48.5 percent men to 51.5 percent women and the culture is made
of a variety of ethnic backgrounds.
With such a large population, Chicago is comprised of numerous industries. For
one, tourism is a huge business, attracting more than 30 million domestic and
international travelers every year. There are cultural organizations,
festivals, music venues, nightclubs, trade shows, and hundreds of attractions
drawing these people to Chicago. To accommodate all the visitors, more than
28,000 hotels provide services.
A few examples of growing business in Chicago include the US Government,
Chicago Public Schools, Jewel-Osco, Ameritech, Bank One Corp., Archdiocese of
Chicago, University of Chicago, American Airlines, and much, much more. When
planning a move to Chicago, you will be pleased to discover that the job market
is secure, and in fact, growing. Leading industries cover
finance/Insurance/real estate, retail trade, manufacturing, transportation,
public utilities, medical, professional services, and the state and local
governments.
The majority of rental properties in Chicago offers spacious floor plans,
swimming pools, dishwasher, easy highway access, and immaculately maintained
grounds.
